Wednesday, 17 February 2010 |
Supporters came out in droves to attend the 4th annual Linden Fund USA (LFU) Breakfast Social held on Saturday, January 23rd at the Woodbine Social Club in Brooklyn, NY. The eager crowd of Lindeners and friends was not disappointed, as the LFU produced a spectacular program of entertainment that exceeded last year’s program. International performer, three-time Soca Monarch of Guyana and two-time Road March King, Adrian Dutchin, brought the crowd alive from his opening lyrics. One of the lead vocalists on the band Krosfyah, Dutchin belted out a series of soca tunes and set the tone for the outstanding showcase of talent that followed. Soca Monarch Dutchin returned to the stage in the final moments of the program, called back by onstage by popular demand, to give a fitting finale of pulsing soca rhythms, to the delight of the crowd. Perennial crowd favorite Susan Olton-Kennedy had the crowd in stitches with her portrayal of “Church Lady,” the iconic “granny” with a stick who dished out words of wisdom with an edge and who proved to be more agile than she first appeared!! The performers all kept the crowd engaged throughout the program, sharing their varied talents and heartfelt renditions. Chairman of the New York Chapter of the LFU, George Parris, lead the breakfast program planning team that assembled a delightful mix of artistic performances that included dances, skits, and a wide range of musical genres performed by established performers to the youths who were well represented on the program. According to Parris, “We wanted to put together a great, family-friendly program that reflected our diverse culture, including the various musical styles and rich mix of Caribbean heritage to which we have become exposed here in the New York metropolitan area.” Judging from the reaction of the attendees, the program lived up to their high expectations of the event! Offering opening prayers at the breakfast was Bishop Michael Clarke, who also led the audience to a rousing rendition of “Oh Beautiful Guyana.” Hosted this year by LFU Public Relations Officer, Paula Walcott-Quintin, the program offered an intermingling of positive rap, rousing gospel, hilarious skits, stimulating reggae, and energetic dance routines. Several hours of the entertainment program was streamed live over the internet on gtradioonline.com, allowing Linden Fund supporters in their homes in any part of the world, including Linden, Guyana to follow the program. LFU Board Secretary Linda Felix praised key Fund supporter Garfield Comrie, Western Union’s General Manager. LFU Chairman Vincent Adams presented Comrie with a plaque of appreciation for his sponsorship of strategic Linden Fund events to benefit the community of Linden. The Chairman offered sincere thanks to Comrie for Western Union’s partnership and unstinting commitment to the vision of service that is central to the mission of the Fund. The Fund wishes to offer special thanks to the many donors whose contributions of raffle prizes and delicious food served to make for an outstanding breakfast social. Thank you to the hard working committee members who planned a superb program once again. The event organizers received high praise from attendees for planning and executing a program of such high caliber, a standard that has become synonymous with the Linden Fund organization. |

We promised a fantastic show and what an all day show it was at the 3rd Annual Linden Fund Breakfast Social in Brooklyn on Saturday, January 24th!! And what a superb job by the Organizing Committee, led by the Linden Fund’s Vice Chairman, Keith Semple and the Projects Coordinator, Gordon Alleyne!. The level of energy and excitement was palpable as the audience responded enthusiastically to the acts that comprised the Cultural Show – a highlight of the event. It was unanimous that the ‘Granny’ skit – played by Comedian Susan Kennedy, a member of the SistaSoul Production Company, was a knock-out!! There were calls for her to return next year to dish out her brand of advice and witticism that had the audience in stitches and her ‘miraculous’ recovery from aches and pains to be able to ‘bogle’ and ‘wine down’ to calypso had folks in stitches! |
