Close to 350 Lindenites turned out for the Linden Fund’s 2nd annual Breakfast Social held at the Woodbine Social Club, Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, January 26, 2008. The popular gathering place for Guyanese was awash in Valentine’s theme décor and was a hive of activity as folks mingled and enjoyed a host of delicious dishes and socialized throughout the morning and into the early afternoon hours. There was an air of great nostalgia, camaraderie and friendship that echoed the words of Compton “chata” London who is often heard to remark, ‘Linden people love to be with each other”. Such was the spirit at the Woodbine Social Club, which vibrated to the gospel sounds of Donna Sandy whose CD “The Healing” was on display and a selection of popular tunes by Linden’s own crooner Terry King. Dancer, Jessica performed a solo dance for the crowd which responded warmly to her interpretation of a gospel piece; Hazel and Peter had the crowd going with their ballroom dancing; there were also other activities that entertained the happy crowd.
On hand was LFU Chairman, Dr. Vincent Adams, who also celebrated a birthday that day, an occasion marked with a huge birthday cake shared among the guests. Dr. Adams spoke passionately about the Fund’s accomplishments over the years and stressed the need for them to be involved in giving back to the community. He was particularly proud of the Fund’s first cadre of scholarship holders who graduated from the University of Guyana and who were honored in a lovely ceremony last November at the Watooka Club in Linden. The LFU Chairman looked ahead to the upcoming Town Week activities in April 2008 and pledged the Fund’s continued support of and participation in this important town-wide event. The proceeding’s MC was Gordon Alleyne, Public Relations Officer of the LFU, who urged participation of all Lindenites in the life of the Fund and previewed the next upcoming Fund event in NY, the annual Spring Dance on March 22nd at the Woodbine Social Club. The Fund thanks all those who attended the event and looks to your continued support of its activities and its goals. Music for the event was provided by Michael Stephenson. NJ Chapter Chairman Keith Semple and NY Chapter Chairman Sammy David could not have been happier with the turnout and the stellar work of the committee that planned and executed the event and the following members who worked all day towards its success.
