Feeding the Elderly in Region 10

COVID-19 created unprecedented challenges across the globe, disproportionately impacting the elderly, who were sometimes forced to choose between staying safe but hungry at home or going out for essential supplies and putting their lives in danger.  In Region 10, LFU responded by starting an ambitious feeding program at the height of the pandemic in 2020, delivering hot meals to vulnerable elderly residents in our hometown – especially those who are shut-ins

Hot Meals

Thanks to generous donations from chapter executives and members, we began hot meal deliveries to the homes of 150 senior citizens on both sides of the Demerara River on June 7, 2020. In addition to a nutritious hot meal delivered twice weekly, each senior received one reusable mask for added protection should they venture out.  Armed with the list of confirmed addresses, four teams of young adult volunteers, supervised by the LFU Office Manager, made house-to-house deliveries of meals to elderly residents on both the Mackenzie and Wismar shores. Tropical Reflections, a prominent commercial restaurant in Linden, and NICIL Watooka Complex, a longtime LFU community partner, prepared the meals.

Food Hampers

During our door-to-door deliveries of hot meals, volunteers identified 30 of the most vulnerable elderly residents to continue receiving long-term support from the organization. Nutritious food staples were delivered twice per month to help sustain them as the impact of the pandemic continued to be felt deeply in our community.  The food hamper distribution was covered by NCN TV News in Guyana.

Personal Care Hampers

As the effects of the pandemic continued to be felt in 2021 and 2022, we continued the delivery of hot meals and food hampers on special occasions like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Personal care hampers, delivered in LFU-imprinted, reusable bags during the Christmas holidays, have been part of our sustained effort to support and serve the elderly in Region 10 meaningfully.

Senior Citizens' Luncheons

Linden senior citizens were honored for several consecutive years with an annual luncheon during Linden Town Week. Sponsored by the Town Council and Linden Fund USA, the luncheon showed our appreciation to the stalwarts of the community for their hard work and sacrifice in building the Linden community. Approximately 100 - 150 seniors were entertained and offered complimentary lunch and gift bags at the Egbert Benjamin Center.
