The Linden Fund, USA Announces: Scholarship Aid for Top CXC Scholar

The Linden Fund, USA, furthering its commitment to reward effort and excellence in education, has offered G$ 15,000 monthly funding to top Region 10 CXC Scholar Deon Anderson. A former student of the Mackenzie High School, Anderson garnered a total of 10 subjects, of which 7 were grade ones, at the 2003 CXC examinations. Anderson, the first male to top the region in over 8 years, began his A' Level studies at Queens College in Georgetown in September and will sit those exams in 2005. (December 2, 2003)

LFU Scholarship recipent - Deon AndersonLFU Chairman, Dr. Vincent Adams, during his current trip to Linden, said that "the Board and the members of the Fund are committed to rewarding our young people, who stive for excellence in education and other vocations. This funding will help to defray expenses in transportation and housing for this promising Lindenite and will offer some measure of assistance while Deon continues his advanced studies".


LFU Director and General Officer, Mr. Malcom JohnsonFeatured in a Cathy Wilson Stabroek News story on October 2, 2003, Anderson expressed excitement on hearing he had topped the Region but added, "on second thought, I wasn't too pleased because I had committed myself to getting at least eight grade ones... but I only got seven ... I used to do all the things an average boy my age would do. But I had really... really put my head down to my studies for this CXC examination." LFU Director and General Officer, Mr. Malcom Johnson, Sr., echoed the views of the Board and members when he said "I would like to extend my personal congratulations to Deon on his outstanding performance at the CXC examination."

Quoting the Stabroek News: "This young star, who was described as a prodigy by one of his teachers, lost his biological father at the tender age of three but grew up under the care and guidance of his mother and foster father who watched him progress throughout his Nursery, Primary and most recently his secondary school life. According to one of Anderson's teachers, he always ranked between first and third place in class from form one up to form five. Continuing his long streak of success, Deon copped the first prize in the local and national science fair's oral presentation in the environmental category and the first prize in a National Reading and poetry competition while in third form. He was also one of his school's favourite debaters."

Anderson plans to study chemical engineering after A' Levels in 2005.
