BOF Holder Memorial Project Strengthens Technology Infrastructure at MHS

The unveiling of new equipment to upgrade the computer lab at Mackenzie High School (MHS) took place on February 18, providing improved access to technology and new opportunities to build digital skills essential for academic and professional success. The charitable project, funded by the Holder Family and The Akintayo Holder Fund in memory of Mr. Bartley Oswald Fox (BOF) Holder, is valued at GY $4 million and includes the installation of 12 computers and a one-year maintenance plan for the new systems. Members and friends of the Holder family along with MHS leadership, teachers, students and LFU leadership and staff, were on hand for the official event. For more than 30 years, BOF, as he was affectionately known, served the bauxite industry, including in the role of CEO (acting) of LINMINE and Secretary for BIDCO. The memorial project reflects BOF legacy and love for the Linden community, and his enduring commitment to opportunity for young people as well as expands digital learning opportunities for students and strengthens the school’s technology infrastructure.

New Scholarship Enables Third-Generation Teacher to Further her Studies

The new Leonard A. Nestor Memorial Scholarship has been established through LFU to honor a remarkable life while supporting promising students pursuing higher education—especially in the field of education. The inaugural recipient is Keefia Younge, currently working toward an Associate Degree in Education at the Cyril Potter College of Education in Guyana. Congratulations to Keefia, a third-generation teacher, and heartfelt thanks to the Nestor family for creating this meaningful opportunity in his name. Leonard, who grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, in the 1940s and 1950s, carried a lifelong love for his homeland even after moving to the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. He was inspired by the curiosity and drive of young people and believed deeply in their potential. For decades in his London neighborhood, Leonard mentored and encouraged youth, proudly watching them grow into adulthood and celebrating their successes—an enduring legacy this scholarship now continues. #giveback #support #educationmatters

Terry Bovell Scholarship Expands Support and Enriches Academic Journeys of Youths

Heartfelt thanks to the donors of the Terry Bovell Scholarship Fund, whose vision since 2023 has opened meaningful academic pathways for young people in Region 10 through the stewardship of LFU and LFU Guyana Inc. Their generosity is not simply funding education — it is affirming potential, strengthening confidence, and helping students imagine a future they can actively shape. Because of their commitment, inaugural scholar Latesha Archibald, now in her third year at the University of Guyana, continues her Bachelor of Science studies in Medical Imaging, moving steadily toward a career that will serve her community’s health and well-being. This school year, the scholarship also welcomed Tyrese Edwards, selected for his academic excellence and dedication to service. While pursuing year two of a five-year joint degree program at UG, Tyrese also nurtures youths as a part-time teacher at Mackenzie High School — a powerful example of learning and leadership growing together. Thank you to the Bovell family for investing in these journeys and in the brighter futures they represent. # hometown #Linden #Region 10

“Christmas in February?” You Bet, Thanks to the Kadir Family

A heartfelt thank-you to the Kadir Family of East Brunswick, NJ, for their generous “Christmas in February” toy donation! While the holiday season has passed, their spirit of giving continues. Longtime supporters of LFU, the family once again chose the organization as the recipient of the thoughtful toys collected during their annual holiday party — a tradition they have proudly maintained for several years. Their kindness reminds us that generosity isn’t limited to a season; it’s a year-round commitment to caring for others. Because of the Kadir family’s wonderful gesture, children in Region 10 will soon experience the joy and excitement of receiving new toys. We are deeply grateful for their continued partnership and compassion. #donation #community #giving
